yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.

i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.

I actually want to reblog this again because I feel that my tags were beside the point. As an opera singer, my voice is something I have trained for over fifteen years to accomplish certain tasks. I am intimately familiar with its feel, its sound, its capabilities, in a way that most people are not familiar with their own voices. This is not a slight against non-singers; it’s simply the truth.

I’m also familiar with what it feels like to be judged for that voice and what I do with it. I’ve learned to stand my ground against it, and in doing so, have embraced it as something precious to me. That’s how it is when you’re judged for something: either you cast it aside, or you hold it closer and never let anyone tear you away from it.

Any singer or voice actor is going to feel the same way about their voice. Our voices are precious to us in a different way than an ordinary person’s voice is precious to them. They are the result of careful training and expertise. The actor who said it was like someone was puppeting their body was not exaggerating, either. Your voice is intricately linked with your body in ways that most people are not aware of. It’s not just your lips, your teeth, your tongue, your throat. It’s your lungs, your diaphragm, the way you stand, the way you hold your body. All these things are part of how your voice is produced, and no one is more aware of that than someone who has been trained to use their voice a certain way.

I don’t know if I’m explaining this right. But consider that the voice is a product of the whole body, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, and understand that it is a much more intimate violation than it seems, to use someone’s voice like that. It’s unacceptable. Please don’t do it.
